The Heinrich Böll Foundation is a German, independent political foundation. offer Phd scholarships and it grants scholarships to approximately 1,000 undergraduates, graduates, and doctoral students of all subjects and nationalities per year

Requirements for applicants include the following:

  • proof of admission to doctoral studies by a state or state-recognised university, as a rule in Germany
  • preliminary work must have been completed
  • valid timetable for completion
  • proof of social commitment
  • proof of proficiency in German

Benefits

  • Scholarship holders from an EU country receive of 1,350 euros per month, while a non-EU country receive 1,000 euros per month
  •  a research cost allowance of 100 euros per month
  • various individual allowances.
  • Additionally a family allowance may be granted.

Eligibility

  • Works either for a public authority or a state or private company in a developing country and, as such, is engaged in the planning and execution of directives and projects with emphasis on development policies having a bearing on technological, economic or social areas.
  • Holds a Bachelor’s degree in a related subject.
  • Has completed an academic degree with far above average results (upper third).
  • Minimum of two years of related professional experience.
  • Academic degrees are noot older than six years old.
  • For courses in German: DSH 2 or TestDaF 4; at time of application German skills at completed level A2 are required. In addition, German language courses at level A2 or B1 are highly recommended.
  • For courses in English: IELTS (Band 6) certificate or TOEFL (minimum score: 550 paper based, 213 computer based, 80 internet based).

Requirements

  • DAAD application form for research grants and study scholarships.
  • Motivation letter containing a precise description of the applicant’s academic / professional and personal reasons for wishing to participate in the programme.
  • Curriculum Vitae including information about precise field of study and, if applicable, description of job experience.
  • Copies of acquired university degrees (an explanation of the grading system has to be attached)
  • Copies of the transcript of records.
  • Copy of the school leaving certificate/High School diploma which entitles holders to study at a university in their home country.
  • Recent language certificates.
  • Two letters of recommendation by university professors and/or current or former employers.
